Hooked Mats
Raleigh Mats are made by hand every step of the way. Original patterns are adjusted for size and then transferred onto burlap. For mats made in the rag style, strips of fabric are cut for every colour, shade and texture that will go into the mat. For wool mats, home-spun wools are cut into workable lengths. The burlap is then stretched on a frame and hooked by passing a needle through the burlap and pulling through the fabric or wool. This can take two to three weeks for a large mat. Edges are then turned under, labels sewn in, quality is assured, and the mat is ready to head to a welcoming home.

As in the early days of mat-making, our mats can be used for utility or decoration. The rag styles can be used as working floor mats if you are so inclined. Or they can be hung and treasured for years. Our wool mats should not be used on the floor. But all our mats are made to last. Our intention is that these mats become something handed down to the next generation and the next and the next.....

Mat hookers were never identified by name in the early days of mat hooking in Newfoundland and Labrador. We are very proud of the work of our mat-makers and we want you to know who made and designed your mat. Both producer and designer are identified on our product tags.
